About the Davis Cup

The Davis Cup is an international team competition in men’s tennis run by the ITF (International Tennis Federation). The tournament was founded in 1900 by four members of Harvard University tennis team.

Sixteen of the world’s best national teams make up the numbers in so called 'World Group' where they compete in a knock-out format for the Davis Cup over four weekends each year.

Each tie is played over three days (Friday to Sunday). There are two singles matches played on day one, followed by a doubles match on day two and finally the tie is completed on day three with yet another round of two singles matches (unless there is an injury these usually are reverse matches from day one). There is a point to be gained in each match and the first team to get three points in the tie qualifies for the next round.

Ties can be played on any surface with home teams having the advantage of choosing it.

Most successful teams include the USA, winning the competition 32 times, closely followed by Australia who have got their hands on the trophy 24 times.
